5 Vishal-Shekhar Songs that defined the 2000s

The popular music director duo has had some huge hits in the first decade of this millennium that, in many ways, set the pace for things to come. Here are 5 Vishal-Shekhar tracks from 2000-2009 that you have to put on your playlist.

1) Tu Aashiqui Hai (Jhankaar Beats, 2002)

This 2002 musical is widely credited to have been the moment the country woke up to Vishal-Shekhar. And a lot of that was thanks to this incredibly popular gospel choir inspired track that stood out and helped many a young lover profess their affection.

Listen to it for: An instant rush of uplifting joy, an irresistible urge to clap to the beat.

2) Allah Ke Bande (Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II, 2003)

Despite its popularity, most folks don’t even know this song was a Vishal-Shekhar composition! Simplicity is the USP of this powerful track, with the music director duo making the most of Kailash Kher’s unique voice to make listens feel each and every word.

Listen to it for: The perfect combination of vocals and instrument, with Kher’s powerful vocals complemented by a subtle acoustic guitar led score.

3) Dus Bahane (Dus, 2005)

Very few remember this movie, but EVERYONE remembers its fantastically fun title track! With its instantly recognisable clap to the beat opening, Vishal-Shekhar set the standards in dance numbers with this ditty and it became the first of a long list of super-hit dance tracks they’d go on to compose.

Listen to it for: One of the catchiest tunes ever, that makes it a firm party favourite even 14 years on.

4) Right Here Right Now (Bluffmaster, 2005)

The first authentic hip-hop track to make it to a mainstream bollywood movie, this Vishal-Shekhar composition paved the way for a slew of imitators to follow. Not only was the song a bop, but the decision to make Abhishek Bachchan sing it was a masterstroke!

Listen to it for: That classic yet catchy hip-hop groove that stayed true to the genre it comes from.

5) Desi Girl (Dostana, 2008)

For its sheer energy and ability to get all the ladies to the dance floor, this track deserves to be the top of everyone’s list. Vishal-Shekhar infused a young vibrant beat that married indian & western vibes into this track, and that coupled with some solid lyrics makes this the go-to song for desi girls living across the world!

Listen to it for: Those fantastic dhol base beats! They make the song what it is!

Special Mentions:

Ajab Si (Om Shanti Om, 2007)

Melodic. Beautiful. And with the rare added treat of Shekhar himself singing.

Sajnaji Vari Vari (Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., 2007)

Signature high energy coupled with superb use of fellow Gaana Music Festival performer Sunidhi Chauhan’s strong vocals.
