Alka Yagnik Through The Years

A playlist featuring the voice of Bollywood heroines since 1980

Alka Yagnik has been singing for close to 4 decades! That’s right. Almost 40 years of singing some of the most memorable songs ever! As we welcome her to the Gaana Music Festival this year, let us give you a sense of what that career timeline truly means. Here’s a specially curated list of tracks spanning her incredible career starting 1980. Putting this list together was amongst the hardest things we could have ever done!

1) Gazab Ka Hai Din (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, 1988)

Iconic movie. Iconic soundtrack. A fresh faced innocent Juhi Chawla and the sweet voice of Alka Yagnik for this song was a match made in heaven. If listening to this doesn’t make you smile, we have no idea what will! In an exclusive interview with Gaana Music Festival (coming soon!) Alka told us this is one of her favourite soundtracks of all time.

2) Dheere Dheere Pyar Ko (Phool Aur Kaante, 1991)

A HUGE hit when it was released, this romantic duet with Kumar Sanu helped establish Alka Yagnik as one of Bollywood’s leading voices. It may be 28 years old, but this song offers pure listening pleasure even today.

3) Tip Tip Barsa Paani (Mohra, 1994)

90s songs don’t get more iconic than this. There is a whole generation that grew up with this Alka Yagnik- Udit Narayan sexy duet. These two legends have sung ¬†innumerable songs together, but there are few as memorable as this.

4) Pucho Zara Pucho (Raja Hindustani, 1996)

If you want to hear Alka Yagnik at her best, listen to this song now! Fun, a little teasing, and all that love – the singer conveys it all with aplomb in this one.

5) Gali Mein Chand (Zakhm, 1998)

A film that few remember, but a song everyone does. Emotion. Joy. Longing. There is nothing this track misses, and that’s all thanks to the veteran singer. This is vintage Alka Yagnik.

6) Kisi Disco Mein Jaaye (Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, 1998)

Pure joy. With a shimmy. And lots of latka-jhatkas. This Govinda-Raveena dance classic had Alka Yagnik at her energetic peppiest best.

7) Dilbar Dilbar (Sirf Tum, 1999)

Seductive is not a word often used for an Alka Yagnik song, but this extremely memorable number changed that perception totally!

8) Taal Se Taal (Taal, 1999)

At the height of Alka Yagnik’s career came Taal. This Rahman musical is widely considered one of the most complete soundtracks ever and her soft rendition of the title track was a show stopper on it!

9) Bole Chudiyan (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, 2001)

Basically when Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan sing together, it is perfection. And Bole Chudiyan is the epitome of that. Vibrant and melodious, this is the go-to song for everything from dance competitions to weddings and sangeets.

10) Agar Tum Saath Ho (Tamasha, 2015)

She may not be singing as much in the last few years, but let no one doubt she’s still got that magic in her voice. This ¬†soulful number from Tamasha was the stand-out song of 2015 and on loop everywhere. Many feelings WILL be felt with this one.
